Ways to Wellness

- Laugh More - No joke. Doctors
say laughing reduces stress, anxiety and tension. It keeps your
immune system stronger.
- Eat Better - Choose meals that are
low in fat and high in fiber. In other words, eat less meat but more
grains. Dishes heavy in fat and salt should be avoided or at least
eaten in moderation. Make sure you get five servings of fruits and
vegetables per day. Also, add tomatoes to your diet. Doctors
say they carry a powerful antioxidant called lycopene that reduces the
risk of many cancers, including breast and prostate.
- Exercise - Join the company
exercise program, if they have one. If not, find ways to do
something physical on a regular basis. Exercise shows aging and
helps fight off disease and other illnesses that prematurely breaks down
the body.
- Floss and Brush Daily - Dentists
say gum disease weakens the immune system -- making you get sick more and
stay sick longer.
- Maintain Healthy Friendships and Social
Networks - Feeling supported by others makes you happier, gives you a
feeling of control and support and reduces stress.
- Get Consistent Rest - Studies show
that adequate sleep boosts the immune system and slows the aging process.
- Be Medically Astute - Stay informed
about health and health-related issues. Men need to know they need
to be tested for prostate cancer by age 40; women need to understand the
importance of regular breast examinations. Many diseases are
prevalent in the Black community and we should keep abreast of them and be
informed of ways to lower our risks for these killers.
- Pray and Meditate - Prayer does
change things. Doctors have long discovered patients who embrace
faith and recover faster after surgery and stay well longer than those who
don't.
